CANDLELIGHTERS

Through the generous donations of drivers, crews and sponsors we have taken children with cancer—known as the candlelighters,  to the races for the past three years.

Candlelighters children often request the opportunity to visit a particular place that is special to them.

This is sometimes the fulfillment of one of their last wishes.  Because of the opportunity that we provide, attendance has doubled each of the last three years.  Below you will find a copy of the schedule that we have for the kids at the track and what we do for them.  Please look at it for it will tell you to what level we go through to show them a good time.  The time, money, and effort expended is well worth it.

Some of the kids do not survive their illness from year to year.  At each race we hold a memorial lap with the parents in honor of their child.  The memories of these children shall live on forever in our hearts.  The pleasure of giving the children  the opportunity of spending time with their parents and friends makes all the work and effort we, our committee, and all involved well worthwhile.   It’s hard sometimes to tell who is getting the most pleasure out of this annual trip: The younger kids, the older kids (sometimes called parents), the  racecar drivers, the safety crews, the race officials, or Stephanie and me.

It is not possible to do this without falling in LOVE with these kids, and holding them in your arms while you say a prayer for their health.  Now our plans include taking a youth to the races to become a part of a race team for a weekend.  Taking care of some of the younger ones with Vacation Bible School and Crafts on Saturday morning and afternoon.
